Marks of Excellence, Per Mollerup
Type and Image, Philip Meggs
Undersanding Comics, Scott Mccloud
I found the section entitled "Icons, Indices, Symbols" interesting and helpful because it pertains to project number one. It explains the difference between each, which is that icons and indices are motivated signs, while symbols are arbitrary signs. In other words icons are linked to their object similarity, images are highly representational, and indices are physically liked to the object. This section also explained metaphorical signs, which i found interesting. These signs share conceptual qualities with the object like an umbrella as a trademark that works as a metaphor for protection or safety. It will be important to keep these characterisitcs in mind when designing my animal. I need to mix up my designs and not make them all so literal. I need to try to mix it up and throw in some symbols, trademarks, and metaphysical designs.
I also really enjoyed the comic. I found it insightful and a new way of looking at the artist, writer, comic relationship. It was interesting how the artist abstracted the main character throughout the sequence. This is also a tool that i will need to utilize in my first project.
